Windows XP: how to lock your Computer

A certain key combination, you can lock Windows XP your Computer. Depending on which logoff option you have enabled, Windows when Locking different. We will show you when and how to use the different scenarios to occur.

Windows XP: Computer Shortcut lock

To lock your Computer, simultaneously press the keys "Windows" and "L". In the "control panel", you can additionally specify what exactly should happen:
  1. Click on "Start" and open the "control panel".
  2. Select the "user accounts" and click on the Option "change the way users log".
  3. Here you can use the "welcome page" and "Fast user switching" to select use. With a click on the Button "options apply" the settings are stored (see image).
  4. Depending on how you combine the two options with each other, other blocking scenarios. These we introduce in the Following.
Windows XP lock

Fast user switching is enabled

You have selected both options, you will get when you Lock the computer, such as when switching users on the welcome page. There you can log in again later, but other users can access your accounts.

Fast user switching disabled

Disable the second Option is enter displayed at the Lock a small window prompting you for your password. It is only when you have done that, you can regain access to the Computer.

Welcome page disabled

- Disabled welcome page, you can access it via the key combination "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "Del" on a menu Called "Windows security". Here, in addition to the shut down and log off the Option "lock Computer" available.
