Broken-In Microphone: Hardware Problems
The Problem is probably your Computer, but the microphone itself:
- Check whether you plugged in the device properly. Microphone Sockets are usually outlined in pink and marked with a hand-held microphone (see picture).
- You test the microphone on another device. It should work there also, may be a cable break cause of the disorder.
- The device should not only work on your Computer, try a different microphone to your Computer. The error also occurs here, the Problem is either on your sound card, or wrong settings.

Have you checked whether the microphone is still working properly on another device, you should perform the following steps in your Computer:
- Open the control panel, and then click "Hardware and Sound". There you click on "Sound" and then click "recording devices".
- You will now see a list of all the microphones that are available to you (see Screenshot). Your microphone should be on it, then click with the right mouse button, and then click "Activate" and on "set As default device".
- Your microphone should not be displayed there, it will not be recognized by your Computer. This can happen if your sound card or the microphone is defective. In some cases, the only (current) driver is missing, however, also simply.

Your microphone can also be not detected when important drivers are missing.
- In the case of a USB microphone, the driver is included with the device. Otherwise, you can download the driver on the manufacturer's website. A simple Google should suffice search.
- Also a driver for the sound card can be helpful. Which driver you need depends on your sound card. You read the user manual of your motherboard.
- Alternatively, Download Everest and check what Motherboard you have.
