Dab or Dab+: these are the differences

DAB stands for "Digital Audio Broadcasting", the new digital mode of Radio. There are also DAB+. The differences between the two types of transfers, we will explain in this practical tip.

The differences between DAB and DAB+ at a Glance

The newer DAB+, you will find now on most digital Radios. The new Standard differs in many points from the old DAB:
  • DAB+ uses MPEG-4 audio codec. Considered to be one of the best Codes that are currently used. The older DAB supports only the MPEG-1 Codec, it compresses the media.
  • However, the data rate for DAB+ is low: While receiving the old DAB at 128 kbps, it is the newer Standard, only 80 kb per second.
  • At first it sounds bad, however, the provider can put more channels on the frequency band. However, the compressions are so complex and their devices must be more efficient.
  • However, DAB+ is becoming more and more: Some radio stations can you receive only on DAB+. This is a free choice of the Sender and not a technical specification.
You want your Radio with DAB or DAB+ receive, you may not need a separate device. Also your Computer can be used as a digital Radio work: As you proceed, you will learn in the next practice tip "DAB with the Computer received".
