Some banks offer Online-Banking, chipTAN procedure, but many customers do not even know what it is. We will show you what chip and how the technology works.

Online Banking: So chipTAN works

The chipTAN procedure is also under the name of eTAN and smartTAN known. Many German banks offer the procedure in the meantime. Depending on the Bank, the procedure is slightly different:
  • For the chipTAN procedure, you need two things: your debit-card, and a TAN-Generator.
  • Start the Transfer on your Computer or Smartphone and ask for a chipTAN.
  • Then, insert the debit card into the TAN Generator and scan the image Code on the Computer.
  • Subsequently, it is generated on the device, the TAN can transfer in the Online Banking.
  • Note: There is also a chipTAN procedure, in which the data of the Transfer are entered directly on to the TAN-Generator.

chipTAN: Is the procedure safe?

  • The chip is one of the safest TAN procedure in Online Banking: There are two different transmission paths are used - the Internet and the TAN-Generator. Stiftung Warentest rated in Banking-Test of the safety as "very high".
  • Even if your Computer or Smartphone is hacked, the authorization only on your debit card in the TAN Generator. And you keep offline in the hands.
  • Tip: always Check both on the PC or the Smartphone, as well as on the TAN-Generator, whether it is the correct account data. So you always stay on the safe side.
  • Watch in addition to your debit card, it can happen to you as good as nothing. The TAN Generator is for thieves to be useless. Here no information will be saved.
