SSDs optimize: enable AHCI
You have upgraded your PC with a SSD, the SATA Controller usually continues to be in IDE or RAID mode. The SSD, however, the TRIM command, the mode works only in AHCI. You can't change the Sata Controller in the BIOS, then Windows does not boot, however. The only way leads, therefore, by an entry in the Registry:
- Start the registry Editor.
- Navigate to the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci". Double-click on "Start" and change the DWORD value to 0.
- Also, find the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStorV" and enter as a DWORD value of 0.
- Now you need to restart the computer and the corresponding Change in the BIOS make. Under "Advanced Chipset Features" to set "SATA Mode" to AHCI mode.

SSD drives optimize: It goes even faster
For an optimum Interaction between the computer and the SSD, the operating system needs to be adjusted. This is a small Tool done for you:
- Install the free Tool "SSD Tweaker" on your computer.
- The program recommends the optimal settings. You can apply by clicking on the Button "Automatic optimization".
- You will then need to restart the computer for the Changes to be saved.

Faster SSDs: Delete the paging file
The paging file is created, write access, the cost of Performance. You could turn off the paging file, but this would lead to a Crash when the RAM is exhausted. Delete, therefore, prefer to file at every shutdown:
- The paging file at every reboot delete to start the registry Editor.
- Navigate to the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\memory management" and click on the entry "clearpagefileatshutdown" twice.
- Enter a value of "1" and confirm with "OK". For the Change to take effect, you must restart the computer again.

SSD to Speed: Disable the sleep mode
The sleep mode is a special power-saving mode. It protects the battery, however it does mean for the SSD, any amount of write accesses. The SSD does not consume much power, so you need the sleep mode may not. Instead, you can disable it and instead use the Standby-function use.
- The sleep mode to disable components, restart you back to the command prompt as an Administrator.
- Type the command "powercfg –h off" and confirm with [Enter]. As a result, the sleep mode is disabled and the file "hiberfil.sys" deleted.
- You don't need to turn off your PC completely, using the Standby mode. End all write accesses on the SSD and store your data in RAM.
A SSD will not only work optimally, you should hold for as long as possible. In the next article, you will learn how the life of a SSD disk extend. We have the best SSDs tested and in our best list.
