Grilling without aluminum foil
When grilling, you often use aluminum foil to protect the food from harmful hydrocarbons or to grill it gently. Since aluminum is harmful to your health and the environment, you should avoid aluminum if possible.
- Aluminum can dissolve when it comes into contact with acid and salt. You should therefore never wrap marinated meat or vegetables in aluminum foil. Acidic fruits or vegetables must also not be wrapped in aluminum foil.
- Fish, meat and vegetables therefore only have to be seasoned after grilling in aluminum foil.
- Aluminum can get into food. The metal has a negative effect on the human nervous system, fertility and bone structure. The weekly aluminum content should not be more than one milligram per body weight.

Tips for environmentally friendly grilling
Even if you dont use aluminum foil, there are still other ways to be environmentally friendly when grilling. Here are some tips:
- Use a gas grill or an electric grill to reduce CO2 emissions.
- Use charcoal from sustainable forests or coconut shells to minimize environmental impact.
- Avoid disposable tableware and use reusable plates, cutlery and glasses instead.
- Buy local and seasonal grilled food to reduce your carbon footprint and support the local economy.
- Avoid food waste by only cooking as much food as you need. Leftovers can be used the next day.
- Clean your grill with environmentally friendly cleaning products or simply with water and vinegar.
