If you want to switch on your Windows computer remotely, you can set up the Wake on Lan (WoL) function. Well show you how to do it.

When is Wake on Lan possible under Windows?

  • Hardware: The BIOS must support Advanced Power Management (APM) or Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI). Your network card must also be ready for Wake on Lan.
  • Router: To turn on your computer remotely, you need an active LAN connection to your router that supports the feature.
  • Power: If you have a desktop computer, it must be permanently connected to power. This is not the case with laptops. However, the activated function sucks on the battery.
  • Note: If you dont know if your hardware is ready for Wake on Lan, just try it out. Most newer computers and routers support the feature.

Step 2: Configure Wake on Lan individually

The function is activated, but can now be further adapted to your needs:

  1. In the LAN adapter properties, go to the "Advanced" tab. Here you can see a list of various hardware properties. Here, look for the entry “Wake-UP Capabilities” or something similar.
  2. You now have several options available to you on the right, such as “Link Change” and “Magic Packet”.
  3. The computer switches on via “Link Change” when the network cable is plugged in. With "Magic Packet" the computer is only woken up when a special Wake on Lan packet is sent to it. This ensures that you can only start the system with the correct data for the PC.
  4. Some computers also have the "Wake-On-Lan Shutdown" or "Wake from Shutdown" option. This allows you to turn on your computer even when it is completely shut down and not just in hibernation or sleep mode.

Step 3: Set up Wake on Lan in the router

So that you can now switch on the computer via Wake on Lan, you must set up your router accordingly. Instructions on how this works via a FritzBox can be found here .
