Windows: AppData-folder view

In Windows, some program settings, and temporary files in the hidden AppData are stored together in the folder. So you can view them, you need to make first the AppData folder visible.

Windows 10: the AppData ads

In Windows 10 you have three options, the folder AppData to show.

  • Open the Explorer and enter the search term %appdata% in the address bar. Confirm with [Enter] to display the folder view.
  • A further Option on the Run Dialog. To do this, press the key combination [Windows]+[R] and enter %appdata%. With the input confirmation, you arrive to the searched folder.
  • Alternatively, you can navigate to the path "C:\Users\[your user name]". Sometimes the path looks like this: "C:\Benutzer\ [your user name]. Then, you navigate in the menu bar to the "view" tab and tick the Option "show hidden elements".

Proceed as follows:

  1. Click "Start" and open "Computer".
  2. Select the top-left of the drop-down menu "Organize".
  3. In the context menu click on "folder and search options".
  4. Then go to the tab "view".
  5. You put the dot in "show hidden files, folders, and drives".
  6. Then close the window by clicking on the "OK"button.

To open the AppData folder

Make sure you know what you want to change the AppData-folder. As system-relevant files, you should be careful to protect your Windows from crashing.

  1. Click "Start" and then click your user name.
  2. There you will find the folder "AppData" with the sub-folders "Local", "LocalLow" and "Roaming".
  3. Even faster, open the folder, if you press the key combination [Windows] + [R] and in the "Run"-window "%appdata%" (without the quotation marks).
