The question is, how big is the swap file for Windows, there is no universally valid answer. We will give you nevertheless, tips on how to optimize virtual memory.

The paging file optimally configure

Windows uses the paging file as virtual memory, program files and system files for a faster access to outsource. In many cases it is not necessary at all, the size of the paging file can be set manually. Windows manages this dynamically, that is, the size of the paging file automatically adapts to the current needs. An optimization of the paging file, however, can have a positive effect on the performance of the computer.
  • One for all Computer valid ideal size for the swap file it is not there. On the Internet it is common to read that these should be about one and a half times as large as the installed memory (RAM). However, this is only partially correct. With 2 GB of RAM, a 3 GB swap file is certainly useful, with 16 GB of RAM, a paging file with 24 GByte of size, however, only little sense.
  • Also it is common to read that you can disable if there is sufficient RAM, the swap file completely. However, this is not recommended, as some programs require a paging file, and then no longer work correctly.
  • Because the dynamic management of Windows, can slow down the System, it is useful to have a fixed size for the paging file.
  • In the settings for the virtual memory, see "total paging file size for all drives" is a recommended value, to the Windows for your System is determined on an individual basis and to follow. You can find this under "control panel" → "System and security" → "System" → "Advanced system settings" → "Advanced" → "performance" → "settings..." → "Advanced" → "Virtual memory" → "Change...".
  • Microsoft also recommends to move the paging file to a different Partition and different physical hard disk drive so that Windows can be faster to access this. The paging file is moved, however, from the system partition, this can cause system errors, problems, because Windows creates a memory dump file more. As you move the paging file, read here.
  • To work around this Problem, Microsoft does not recommend that to be kept on the system partition, a small swap file (400 MB) and to create another on a different Partition.
  • It is useful to put the second page file on a fast hard disk. Microsoft even suggests to use a Partition that contains no other files.
