Reset Windows update - thats how it works

If your operating system cannot be updated, it can help if you reset the Windows Update. Microsoft offers automatic diagnostic tools for this, but you can also carry out the process manually.

Microsoft provides automatic diagnostic and repair tools for Windows to reset Windows update. Depending on the installed Windows version, you will find this in a slightly modified place:

  • Windows 10: Open Start > Settings > Update & Safety > Problem Treatment > Additional problem treatments . Then select Windows Update > Execute problem treatment .

1. Open the input request as an administrator . In Windows 10, right-click on the Windows icon and select in the context menu Entry request (administrator) .

2. As a result, the Windows update service, the cryptography service and the BITS service are stopped.

  • net stop bits
  • net stop wuauserverv
  • net stop cryptsvc

3. Next, enter this command in the command prompt. This deletes the QMGR*.dat file from your hard drive.

        cd /d %Windir % System32

        5. To do this, enter the following commands in the command prompt and confirm with the input key:

        6. Now enter this command to reset Winsock:

    • Netsh WinSock Reset

    7. Use Windows XP, enter this command instead:

      proxycfg.exe -d

    8. Now you have to restart the services stopped in step 2. This is done by the following commands in the command prompt:

    • net start bits
    • net start Wuauserverv
    • net start cryptsvc

    9. If you use Windows Vista, you must now enter this command in the command in order to reset the bitss queue:

      bitsadmin.exe /reset /allusers

    10. Install the latest version of the Windows update agent. You can download the right version for your operating system directly from Microsoft .

    11. Restart your computer to complete the reset of Windows update.

    If the problem cannot be solved via the manual procedure, you can also carry out the following between step 3 and 4: name the three folders "DataTore", "Download" and "Catroot2" so that they are created again. To do this, enter these commands in the command prompt:

    • Ren %Systemroot % Softwaredistribution DataSstore DataSstore.bak
    • Ren %Systemroot % Softwareedistribution Download.bak
    • Ren %Systemroot % System32 Catroot2 Catroot2.bak

    In addition, enter these two commands in the command prompt to completely reset the Windows Update Service and Bits Service:

  • sc.Exe sdset bits d: (a ;; cclcswrpwpdtlocrrc ;;; sy) (a ;; ccdclcswrpwpdoctlocrsdrcwdwo ;; ba) (a ;; cclcswlocrrc ;;;
  • sc.exe sdset wuauserverv d: (a ;; cclcswrpwpdtlocrrc ;;; sy) (a ;; ccdclcswrpwptlocrsdrcwdwo ;;; ba) (a ;; cclcswlocrrc ;;;
