FAT32 is a file system developed by Microsoft. It finds, among other things, on older Windows systems, USB drives and alternative operating systems.

The properties of FAT32

FAT32 is a part of the FAT file system family, which was developed by Microsoft. "FAT" stands for "File Allocation Table", what means "file allocation table".

  • Compared to the previous FAT16, the maximum size of the entire file system of two gigabytes has been increased to eight terabytes.
  • The maximum size of a file on a FAT32 System is four gigabytes.
  • There's also Non-Windows systems, for example, to run OS X or Linux, with FAT32, it is often used on USB Sticks and other portable storage media.
