On Windows XP, you should defragment your hard disk from time to time, in order to increase the Performance. What you need to do, we show you in our tip.

Windows-Tool to start defragmentation

You will be directed to different Paths to XP's own disk Defragmenter tool:
  • The longest path goes via the control panel - administrative tools - computer management - disk Defragmenter.
  • Faster to do it via Windows-start menu - All programs - accessories - system tools - disk Defragmenter (see Screenshot below).
  • The shortest way is via the Windows-start menu - All programs - "Run". Tap the command "dfrg.msc" and click "OK" (see Screenshot).
Open disk Defragmenter

Hard drive or drive partition to defragment

  1. Your Defrag tool is started. Now, select the disk or Partition that is to be cleaned up. You can still defragment a drive.
  2. Click on "Defragment". The progress is displayed in percent. The higher the fragmentation and the manageable amount of data, the longer the process will take.
  3. The cleanup work is completed, you can view a report or close the application. You start again at point 1, if you want to defragment another drive.

Extra tip: With the Tool "HDiskPerf" or "HDiskPerf (64-Bit)", you can, among other things, check whether the defragmentation positive impact on the Performance of your drives has impacted.
