Digital antennas-television: DVB-T2
DVB-T stands for "Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial" and is nothing else than the well-known antenna television.
- In this way you can receive about 20 to 30 different channels. Depending on which Region you live, from radiation in addition to ARD and ZDF also private TV channels (e.g. RTL or ProSieben) their programmes via DVB-T.
- Currently we are in the phase of Transition from DVB-T1 to DVB-T2 Standard. DVB-T2 enables a very efficient coding (H. 265) of the video signal, many channels in relatively little bandwidth to accommodate.
- About the middle of 2019, all broadcasts will be switched off in the DVB-T1 Format.
- A new antenna do not need to install them in most cases. One of the core ideas of the new Standards was that the old antennas have to be for the most part, compatible.
- Your age DVB-T1 Receiver is not compatible to DVB-T2, which is why you have a new Set-Top Box or a television with integrated Decoder need. In almost all current TV models, this is already the case. When buying, make sure the DVB-T2 Logo.

What is the meaning of DVB-S and DVB-S2?
Under DVB-S is an ETSI Standard that describes the television reception via satellite. Also, this Standard is how the TV antenna already in the second Generation DVB-S2:
- Here it is so that the HD channels are usually transmitted via DVB-S2 and the SD channels via DVB-S. DVB-S2 has been in terms of HD content developed and offers a better error protection as well as optimized video coding (H. 264).
- Exceptions confirm the rule. For example, WDR HD Aachen or WDR HD Wuppertal are still on the old DVB-S Standard.
- For you as a customer this means that you should have a Receiver that supports both Standards.
- Most modern televisions have a Tuner for both Standards, because it is not certain how long it parallel broadcasts via DVB-S(1) will give. Otherwise you need an external Receiver.

DVB-T or DVB-S - the-differences
The biggest difference between the two receiver types, the transmitter diversity is:
- On the antenna TV receive, depending on the provider approx. 20 free public service and a further 20 private fee-based programs.
- For the new nationwide DVB-ceiling-T2 no extra cost, if you want to see only public broadcaster. For all private broadcasters have to you approximately 60 € per year to pay. All programs are broadcast in this way, only in HD, there is an additional broadcast, would apply in SD only bandwidth waste.
- Also new to the DVB-T2 Standard of improved mobile reception at high speeds, with a sensitive satellite dish, of course, not realize is also.
- In the case of satellite TV the number of channels is significantly higher. Several Hundred stations are accessible.
- Also the reception after the investment costs for the satellite system is theoretically free of charge. Pay you only if you also have private channels in HD-quality want to receive. The cost here approx. at 60€ in a year.
- Public broadcasters in HD, as well as the private channels in SD, you can receive but actually free.
We will explain in the next post, the difference between DVB-T and DVB-C.
