You buy a new phone, it is often the VoIP-capable. Few people know, however, what lies behind this designation. We make it clear to you.

Simply explained: What is VoIP?

Voice over IP, short VoIP, refers to phone Calls over the Internet. Your phone sends its signals not via the phone line, but via the Internet line.
  • With VoIP, ISDN is used-in the Standard is superfluous and, probably, in some years, not as good as even more.
  • The change from ISDN to VoIP devices to be running very slowly, since providers need to offer both Standards. There are very many ISDN, there are still devices on the market.
  • The advantage of VoIP is the cost reduction for the user and also the Provider is. Surfing and phone Calls run over the Internet and thus on only one line.
  • A slower Internet connection, you do not need to worry about by the use of VoIP. The Transmission of the voice signals, consumes only very little bandwidth.
  • At first glance you can't tell the difference between an ISDN phone and a VoIP phone. Only the missing cable to the phone socket features of the VoIP phones visually.

How does VoIP work?

  • As with the ISDN telephone of the above will be recorded as an analog Signal and stored. The Signal is then converted from analog to a digital Signal and in an audio format encoded.
  • On your network the Signal is routed to the Internet and is sent to the recipient. At the receiver, the digital Signal is converted back into an analog Signal.
In the next practical tip we will show you how secure is VoIP really is.
