Ubuntu on a USB Stick to install - how to

In this practical tip we show you how to easily install Ubuntu on a USB Stick and what you need.

You need for the Ubuntu Installation

  • For the easy Installation of the Linux operating system Ubuntu, you should use the free Software "Linux Live USB Creator" on your Windows machine and install.
  • Then of course you need a ISO Image of Ubuntu on your PC.
  • To need to last you a USB-Stick. You are using a CD-Image, he must have at least a memory capacity of 1 GByte, a DVD Image, you need 8 GB. Important: Should there be any data on the USB Stick, back them up prior to use. During the Ubuntu Installation, the memory is formatted, all data will be deleted.

  1. First, connect the USB Stick to your Windows machine. In Windows Explorer, you can then look up which drive letter was assigned to the Stick.
  2. Next, start the "Linux Live USB Creator". Under "step 1" select your USB drive with the assigned drive letter.
  3. In "step 2" click "ISO/IMG/ZIP". In the following window navigate to the previously downloaded Ubuntu ISO Image on your computer. The Software checks the Image, this can take a little.
  4. Under "step 3", you can set the size of the persistence store. The persistence of memory denotes the memory capacity on the Stick, which is available in Ubuntu for your data and Changes. Important: the data in the persistence store, you have outside of Ubuntu not able to access.
  5. Now you can set the checkmark next to "Stick with FAT32 format" in "step 4" and also remove the check mark for "Linux live boot of Windows allow".
  6. With a click on the lightning icon to start the Installation of Ubuntu on the USB Stick. The Software takes a few minutes, until the formatting and Ubuntu Installation is completed. Then, you can use Ubuntu from your USB Stick to boot from. May be you need to, however, in the BIOS the boot sequence changeso that the USB-Stick in the first place.
