On FAT 16 format: how to USB-Stick, hard disk and SD card

FAT 16 is now almost extinct, nevertheless, you can format USB-Sticks, SD-cards and hard drives with the file system. We will show you in this practice tip, how to do it.

USB, SD and HDD format to FAT 16

  • With Windows 95, the successor to FAT-32 was introduced. FAT 16 remains active, but with a few restrictions.
  • Only memory cards, USB Sticks and hard drives, which hold a maximum of 4 GB, you can format with FAT 16. The maximum file size is 2 GB.

Instructions for Windows: SD, USB and hard disk drive to FAT 16 format

  1. Simultaneously press the keys [Windows] and [E], so that the Explorer opens.
  2. Now navigate to the connected SD card, USB Stick or hard drive and note the drive letter.
  3. Simultaneously press the keys [Windows] and [X], so that the command "Run" will open.
  4. Enter "cmd" and confirm with "OK". Then, the command starts call.
  5. Now type the following command and confirm with the key [Enter]: "format A: /FS:FAT /Q"
  6. The letter "A" must be replace by the corresponding letter of the drive. Subsequently, the data carrier is formatted to FAT 16.
