Gimp, together with a HDR plug-in with just a few clicks, your photo looks better exposed. Real "High Dynamic Range" is not, of course, but with the right values, a good result can be quickly achieved. The only thing you need 3 images of the same scene with different exposure time.

HDR Plugin install

First of all, you need to install the "Exposure Blend" Plugin from JD Smith.
  1. Download the Plugin from the Website of the developer.
  2. You will have to copy the file in the folder "C://Users/*USERNAME*/.gimp-2.8/scripts".
  3. Click in Gimp click "filters" -> "script-Fu" -> "scripts refresh". Under "Filter" you should find the new menu item "Exposure Blend".

HDR Plugin use

  1. Without the image in Gimp open, click on "filters" -> "Exposure Blend" -> "Blend...".
  2. Under "Normal Exposure" to select the image with normal exposure time.
  3. Under "Short" and "Long Exposure", select the short and the long exposure image.
  4. You like the values, click "OK" and the Plugin will automatically create a HDR image from the three individual images.

The Plugin is "Fake HDR" created you from a single image an HDR-like image. The result looks like, only not quite so realistic. In Gimp a Retro Look to create, you can use this practice tip to read.
