Layer mask in Gimp to add – so it works
- In GIMP you have the ability to each level, a transparent mask to add.
- This mask is called a "layer mask" and has the same size as the layer itself.
- A layer mask add, click on "layer > mask > add layer mask" - then a Dialog box opens.
- In this Dialog, you can select the type of layer mask. The following types are available:

- White (Full opacity): the mask has no effect on the level. To achieve an effect, you must paint the layer mask with black.
- Black (Full transparency): Here, all the pixels of the layer with the layer mask transparent. You paint the layer mask with white, the layer visible again.
- The alpha channel of the layer: the layer mask to fit the alpha channel of the layer.
- The alpha channel of the level: Same setting as the previous one, except that here the alpha channel to full opacity.
- Selection: the layer mask is added to the values of the selection.
- Grayscale copy of the layer: by Using this setting, the layer mask is based on the grayscale values of the image.
Gimp: layer mask use – so go ahead
- After the has been added to the mask, appears next to each level, a rectangle with a white or black filling.
- You can now edit the layer mask with the brush tool. Depending on the selected mask layer and the second layer is then visible. To edit the image itself, right click simply on the respective level.
- You have added two images with a layer mask, you can select the gradient tool so that the two images merge into one another.
- With a black brush to paint on the layer mask and make the Background, so the second image is visible and highlighted.
- Instead, use a white brush and paint on the layer mask, so the Background is made invisible again.
- In addition, with the layer mask also paste pictures together.
