Dolby Surround - the old Standard
- Dolby Surround is a two channel Format. By means of a so-called Matrix encoding, however, two additional channels will be created, the Center and the Rear channel.
- In the classical Stereo-sound, there are only outputs to the left and to the right, the sound is thus perceived only by the left and the right.
- About Dolby Surround, there are four channels, front left, front right, Center, and rear Surround channel. The two rear boxes left and right set, however, comes from you the same sound.

Dolby Digital - the newer Standard
- Dolby Digital is the much newer and more advanced Standard. He works with six independent channels. Five for the normal sound and one for the Subwoofer are required.
- In the case of Dolby Digital, there are front left, front right, Center, rear left, rear right and Subwoofer.
- Unlike Dolby Surround, the sound is on the two rear speakers are not identical. Each speaker can play its own soundtrack.
