1. First a backup, then install Debian
If you have important data on the computer where you want Debian to install, you should create a Backup.
- All data on the Computer will be deleted during the installation process.
- You can use a Backup Tool from our Download section. After that you can start with the Installation.
2. To install the USB-Stick preparing Debian
- Download the Linux-Live-USB-Creator download. He helps you a Live-to create a Medium with which you can install Debian on your computer. How you Live-Medium create we explain on our Download page.
- You choose Debian with the desired graphical user interface. "Default" means that no graphical interface is installed. This is not recommended for starters. Our guide refers to the Version with Gnome.
- Make sure that you get the right processor architecture (32/64Bit) select.
3. To install from the USB Stick to boot Debian
After you have created your Backups on a external storage and the Live is finished and the Medium, leave the USB Stick plugged in and restart your Computer. If the Stick does not start, you need to perhaps the Boot order in the BIOS to change.
4. Installation from Debian the start: language and user settings
If you have made it this far, you can begin to install Debian. The installation program will help you. We have summarized the most important steps for you:
- First of all, you can ask the Installer some information about the desired settings from the language. In General, the correct setting is always English or Germany.
- Next, the network settings follow. The easiest way is installing with a network cable connected to the Router.
- If the network connection is established, ask the Installer to the computer name. Here you can enter what you want. This is the name of the computer in the network will appear. They are limited at best to lowercase and avoid special characters like umlauts or spaces. The next step following the field "domain name", you can free.
- Now you will be prompted for a Root password. Leave the field at best. So it is not possible to log in as Root. The Root user is the system administrator and should not be used if possible at all. System administration there is under Debian the command "sudo". The Dialog tells you.
- In the next step, you set the normal user. First, you type in the full name that will be displayed later. Then, the system follows internal user name. You choose a username that you like. You hold however to the restrictions, such as the computer name.
- Now the password should be queried. Choose a secure password for your user account.

5. The last step in the Debian Installation: hard drive to prepare and install
After the voice and user settings are set, only needs to be prepared the hard disk and the Installation can begin:
- In the next step, the hard disk is formatted. Here you can select the default of "Guided - use entire disk use". Thereafter, the selection of the hard disk should be installed, on Debian. If you have multiple drives, be sure to choose the right one. You can see an example of the size. The selected drive will be deleted before the Installation is complete.
- Click next until you get to the Overview. There is selected "exit partitioning and write Changes". Click on "Continue" and confirm the next Dialog with "Yes". Then the automatic Installation will begin.
- Now, two short calls is yet to come: you will be asked if you want to use a network mirror. Click on "Yes", you must select the desired Server in your area. The GRUB boot loader you need to install also, so that the System can start. You select drive again, the installation disk.
- At the end of the Installation you will be prompted to remove the USB-Stick. After you have done that, you can start the computer with "Next" and after the boot process with your user name to log in.
