You want to insert the Sigma character only in exceptional cases, you can go the more cumbersome route via the string table:
  1. Click in the menu bar, click "Insert".
  2. Click under "symbols" to "Symbol" and then "More symbols".
  3. Select the Subset "Greek and Coptic".
  4. Click in the table on the large or the small Sigma symbol and then on "Insert".

If you need the Sigma-characters more often, a combination of keys:
  1. Enter the numbers 2211, a follow-up "" at the point in the document where you need the Sigma.
  2. Press the key combination [Alt] + [C]. The numbers will then follow, to a large Sigma.
