Under OS X Mavericks, you can customize your Finder window. So you make the sidebar according to your personal taste and provide the Background of the window with colors or pictures.

The sidebar in the Finder, you can equip it with useful elements, such as folders and devices-links:
  1. Restart the Finder by clicking on the icon in your Dock.
  2. Then, click the Apple icon bar, click "Finder" and then on "settings ...".
  3. Here you choose the tab "sidebar".
  4. Now you can see various elements. Tick the respective box to specify, whether, for example, the folder "Downloads" or the hard disks in the sidebar should be displayed.

Also the Background of your Finder window, you can customize individually. The menu you can find in the Apple toolbar:
  1. Open your Finder and click on view > "As icons".
  2. Now re-select "presentations" and then click "show view options".
