Mac OS X: external hard drive repair
If your external hard drive first makes a reading error, it is time for a Scan. Before that, you should back up the faulty hard drive but, otherwise data may be lost. For this you will need another hard drive that is equal to or greater.
- Open the disk utility. You can find it under "applications - utilities". Your bad hard drive you should corners now once.
- Plug in your Backup hard drive. They must be formatted in the HFS+ file system, also known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
- Now select the left of your broken hard drive and go right to the tab "restore". There, you back up the contents of the failed disk on the Backup plate. The source is of course your broken hard drive. As the target media specify your Backup disk.
- When the backup is complete, go back to the tab "First aid". There you will find the Buttons for "verify disk" and "repair disk".

- The utility reports them irreparable error, then only the Delete and Overwrite with zeros helps. This is in disk utility, under the tab "Delete". Then under "security options" to Overwrite with zeros. Thus, defective sectors are detected and eliminated.

System hard disk drive failure: Mac OS X does not start
