MacOS: set up Time Machine

Apple's Time Machine is a Tool that automatically creates Backups of your data. We will show you how to configure Time Machine correctly.

Time Machine Backup volume to select

Time Machine needs a drive on it, the backup copies of your files can save. You use an optimal manner, a volume that at least three times the size of your data, and in the best case, not in the same device is located. An external hard drive, for example, is particularly good.
  1. Time Machine now asks you to, from the list of available drives, select the volume for your Backups.
  2. Make your choice with a click on "Backup disk to use".
  3. Confirm in the dialog window that you want to delete all data from selected drive in order to use it as a Backup volume for Time Machine.

Time Machine settings to configure

Now the fine settings: exclude certain objects from the backup, or stop backup while your MacBook on battery power.
  1. Click in the Time Machine system preferences, click "options".
  2. Here you can configure some settings for your Backup operation and specific objects from the backup, exclude.
  3. Click on the small Plus sign.
  4. Select in the Dialog window, a file or a folder and click "Exclude".
  5. All of the excluded objects will be displayed in the list. To delete an object from the list, select it and click on the little Minus sign.
Time Machine backs up for you from now on automatically any Changes you make to files and folders.
