Backup with iTunes or iCloud? A Comparison

You want to perform a Backup of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can do that through iTunes or iCloud. We provide you with both ways, compare them and show you how they work.

Backup with iTunes or iCloud?

  • Backup via iTunes: The advantage of the "old-fashioned" Backup is the independence from the Internet. You have saved your Backup directly on your PC. However, the Computer is not there, not a cable in sight, or it is broken, it looks bad with the Backup.
  • Backup via iCloud: backup via iCloud can be done from anywhere. You need no cables and no PC, merely a connection to the Internet. You save more than 5 GB of data to your Apple Cloud, you need to buy additional memory.
  • The Backup via iCloud is much simpler and faster. Only in the case of large amounts of data or many photos, the Cloud has its limits. The classic Backup on iTunes, however, is connected with considerably more effort.
  • The Golden middle: you can Use the iCloud to store "normal" data. The memory-eating photos back up, however, you have an iTunes Backup. There, it is completely sufficient if you connect your device once in a month on the Computer.

Backup via iCloud

  1. Open the "settings"App on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and scroll down to "iCloud".
  2. Select all the areas you want to save in the Cloud such as Mail, calendar, contacts, photos, or documents and data, (see image).
  3. Then, select the very bottom of the "storage & Backup".
  4. Here you can activate the Option "iCloud Backup". Now your first Backup is created.

Backup via iTunes

  1. Start iTunes and connect your iOS device via USB cable to your Computer.
  2. Click in the top right in iTunes on the Button with the name of your device. You are now on the Overview.
  3. Under the category of "Backups" you can use the Button "back up Now" to Backup.
  4. Then select the Option "backup Apps" or "Apps is not secure", to help you decide whether the Backup of the Apps to be stored on the Computer. In General, the Backup of the Apps only eats memory and has no real Benefit.
  5. You have now successfully performed a Backup via iTunes.
