Before you can use the Synology media server on the NAS, you need to set it up initially. We will show you in this practice tip on how you exactly approach.

Synology: how to set up the media server

  1. Start the NAS first as usual and log in. In the main menu, click on "Media Server".
  2. On the left side select "General settings" and then click "network interface".
  3. Here you need to select the used network interface from the list. In most cases, you need to select "LAN 1".
  4. Then select the preferred language and set the menu style.
  5. Save the Changes by clicking on"". Wait until the Changes are saved.
  6. In the menu item "search settings" you can define how the media should be found data in the Cloud, or the NAS.
  7. You have a so-called DMA devices that want to access the NAS, you must set the "DMA compatibility".
  8. Tip: to create a folder, navigate in the main menu to "control panel > media indexing" and click "Indexed folder" to the point "Create". You can then select where the folder is to be created and what media types should be stored there.
