The classical connection: The speaker line
A decades-proven speaker connection is simply clamped or screw-down speaker wire:
- The simple speaker cable consists of a two-wire cable and a screw terminal connection.
- The advantage is that you have such a cable by the meter buy cheap, buy can.
- From which lengths of cable which is the cable cross-section makes sense, we can tell you in a further practical tip.
- A disadvantage is that the cable ends are exposed: do not Touch the lines with great performance, can cause the short circuit to a power failure. Touch the line, could also get you a strike. This is a danger, however, is more likely in large facilities than in the home operating.
- A further disadvantage of this loudspeaker connector, the asymmetric Transmission: When the length of the cable and external interference, especially by means of electromagnetic waves, it will disturb the audio signal.
- By the way: "gold-Plated" speaker wires usually have only a gold-plated tip. This does not oxidize as much as copper cable. You can save the extra charge for gold-plated cable, SNiP off all the three years, the tips of their copper cable or clean.
The Standard for passive speakers: RCA connector
In the home audio equipment and speakers with RCA are common in-and output:
- RCA, also RCA connectors are called, have become established in the home for Audio and Video.
- This is also their greatest strength: RCA's as the output of DVD and Blu-ray players, TV devices and game consoles as common as amplifiers.
- You are also conveniently located in all lengths and qualities.
- Their disadvantage is the asymmetrical Transmission is also.
- As an alternative to speaker wiring and RCA, there are occasional speakers with a Mono-Jack input. The differences between Jack and RCA we will explain in a separate practice tip.
The Optimum under the speaker connectors: XLR
XLR connectors a snap, produce no short circuits and the transmission of signals even over long distances low interference:
- XLR is mainly in Amateur and professional spread.
- Here, the audio signal is transmitted symmetrically: interference due to interference are minimized by this procedure.
- However, only the active speaker to provide this connection. The advantage of active speakers is that they themselves contain an amplifier and an extra amplifier must be connected upstream. The disadvantage is that active loudspeakers, due to the more complicated and more expensive technology cost significantly more than passive speakers.
- Alternatively, you can transfer signals via TRS balanced. The downside is that when Inserting the Jack, always a brief short-circuit. All of the differences between TRS and XLR, we will explain in a further practical tip.
