How to set up port forwarding
In almost every Router you can change the settings for individual Ports. You will find the Option often under the heading of Port Forwarding, port forwarding, or port forwarding. But keep safety in mind: do not open more Ports than you really need.
- You search the appropriate menu entry after you have logged in to your Router.
- First, you specify the Port that will be used by the Software on your target computer. As an example: you want to forward HTTP requests from the outside to a Server, make a port forwarding for TCP Port 80. The reason is that outside Computer your HTTP requests to this Port.
- You can also specify a range of Ports, if your Software uses several Ports. (For example: TCP Port 1120 - 1124 or 1120,1124,1128).
- Now you can determine which Computer in the network, the forwarding is directed. Therefore, specify the IP of the computer on which the program is running, you need the forwarding. As an example: if you have set up a HTTP Server that you are from the outside want to achieve, then now you have to specify its IP address.
- Finally, you can determine what Port on your target computer, the routing is scheduled to arrive. In the example, Port 80 for HTTP would be, so you forward the request to the TCP Port 80 of the target computer. The installed Software listens only to data that arrive on this Port.
- Done! With the confirmation of the forwarding now incoming data from the Internet are forwarded to the correct Computer and the correct Port. Now your Software can respond to these requests.
- If there is still something somewhere hooks: check to see if your appropriate Software is also really the set of Ports to be used, or whether they in any previous Attempt have ever changed a Port. Especially in the case of Peer-to-Peer applications, you can set the Ports manually.

The most important Ports for your Router
Different services or programs to use for your purpose usually has its own Port. Who would like to set up a redirect, so need to know the Port that the respective application is using. Also the differences between UDP and TCP Ports.
- HTTP uses TCP Port 80 as the default port for HTTPS, however, uses TCP Port 443.
- Teamspeak uses UDP port 8767 and 8768.
- eMule uses the UDP Port 8767, but often also the TCP Port 4662. Exact settings you can make in eMule itself.
- FTP (File Transfer Protocol) uses TCP Port 20.
- SSH (Secure Shell) uses TCP and UDP Port 22.
- If you want to know it exactly, you can look up the documentation for your Software or the Internet effort. Especially for games, you can research the information, often in Fan-forums. In addition, you can find on Wikipedia a list of standardized Ports.
