MacBook: Built-in camera disable how to

There are more unobtrusive methods to disable your MacBook's camera, as a patch or put a PostIt on it. What we show you in this practical tip.

MacBook-turn off the camera: Move a single file

Move the file "QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component" does not work the camera on your MacBook.
  • In the Finder, navigate to "System -> Library -> QuickTime" and find the file "QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component."
  • Move the file "QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component" in a different folder, for example "documents".
  • Check whether the file is still in the folder "System -> Library -> QuickTime" available. You may need to delete the file from there manually.
  • To activate the camera, move the file back to its original place. Remember where you move them.

MacBook camera with iSight Disabler to disable

With iSight Deisabler you disable the Webcam of your MacBook via Applescript. The Script you can download here for free download.
  • After the Download of iSight Disabler unzip the zip file and move to "user -> YOUR NAME -> Library -> Scripts".
  • Start the AppleScript Editor. You can find it in "applications -> utilities". In order to let the Script in the Apple menu bar, go to the "settings" of the AppleScript editor and put the check mark in the "script menu in menu bar" and "computer scripts show".
  • In the menu bar you will now see the Icon for Scripts. Click on it and then tap on "iSight Disabler". It is a dialog window where you can disable the Webcam and also be able to activate appears.
