VPN Server Windows 7 set up

VPN servers are extremely practical, to be able to from home on the Intranet of the company or University access. Since the establishment, however, can be a little tricky, we will show you here how it works under Windows 7.

1. VPN Client: Download the appropriate Software

To need first of all a suitable VPN Client, which allows you to connect in the first place. There are several vendors - it's Best to use those that your company recommends. A widely-used Software is "OpenVPN", which you here can download.

2. Set up a VPN-access

Before you can start surfing, you must go through a setup process:
  1. Install the downloaded Software by double clicking on the. exe file. You will be led as usual through the installation process. Note the file path under which the program is stored!
  2. After the Installation, you will need two small files, which define the access. You can get directly from your company, University or similar. You have this Client and ovpn files so you can open the client installation directory and locate the folder "config". This should still be empty here, move the received files.
  3. Now it can go fast. In General, you will find on the Desktop Icon of the VPN client - click the button, then right-click and then click "properties". Under the tab "compatibility" can be found at the very bottom, the Option "run this program as Administrator". Turn on the check box and select "Apply", otherwise the connection will not work.
You can find the config folder.

3. Connection to the VPN Server

After a successful setup, you can start the connection - this procedure is run through from then on, every time.
  1. Double-click on the Icon of the VPN client. Nothing seems to happen, but in your task bar, an Icon with two red screens will appear.
  2. Click with the right mouse button on this Icon and select the Connect point "" or "Connect".
  3. There is a Log window, and one in which you enter your assigned user name and password opens.
  4. You have done this, the Login is completed, closes the Log window, the two screens in the task bar is green, and briefly show the message "[your company] is now connected". And you can get started.

The Logout

You want to terminate the VPN connection again, so you are simply looking for the Icon in the task bar. Right click a small menu will open and here you can either "connection" or equal "End select" disconnect. In the Latter case, the Software is closed and the connection is automatically disconnected.
