The thumbs.db file in older versions of Windows

To Windows XP thumbs "appeared.db" in each folder that contained images and Videos. The file is created as soon as you switch to the thumbnail view. So the loading time of the preview is reduced pictures.
  • Hence the Name, incidentally, is the: "Thumbs" for generated Thumbnails of the images and the file extension ".db" refers to the file as a database.

thumbs.db in Windows Vista to Windows 8

Starting with Windows Vista, the location of the "thumbs has.db" changed. The database files are now stored, all centrally located in the path "%sysroot%\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer".
