Files Windows on-Board means to protect
Starting with Windows 2000, you can leave individual files and folders directly through functions in the operating system to encrypt. For Windows Vista/Windows 7 the Ultimate is needed for this Version. You have this, proceed as follows:
- Click the right mouse button on the file or folder to be encrypted and go to the context menu "properties".
- Under the "General" tab, the "attributes". From there you can select the item "Advanced".
- Put a check in the "encrypt contents to secure data" and confirm this with a click on "OK".
- Windows will now ask you whether the Changes should be for this folder or all sub-folders copied. Since the entire content is to be protected, select the item "Changes to this folder, subfolders, and files" and confirm this with "OK".
- Now again display the properties window. Click on "OK", it starts Windows with the Encrypt the Files. Encrypted files is indicated by the fact that the Name is written in green font.

In addition to the Windows function, there are also programs that are focused on Encrypting sensitive data. The advantages of this are that they offer a higher level of security, and the operation is more convenient. Popular and available as Freeware here:

TrueCrypt
Has been tested under the Windows 7 operating system. A replacement for an Anti-virus program to encrypt data is not.
