Ubuntu: fstab – clearly explained

The file "fstab" can be found in the folder /etc on your System. The full path is "/etc/fstab".
  • The abbreviation "fstab" stands for "file system table".
  • The file is a text file and contains the information on how and where storage media and partitions are mounted. They can be opened with any text editor. To edit fstab, you need to be logged in as Root.
  • Each Medium is described in the fstab file in a line: It is the Name of the Partition or of the medium, of the corresponding Mountpoint, the file system, the mount options, Backup options, as well as in the last column of the scan options for file system are displayed.
