GIMP: vector graphics create

Gimp is actually a pixel-oriented program, it can help to create a Form of a vector graphic. How this works, we show an example of this practice tip.

As an example we use an Icon, which we outline want to save as a vector graphic.
  1. Download the file with a transparent Background in Gimp via the menu "file" > "Open ...".
  2. Select in the layers dialog, the open level and click with a right click on it. Choose "selection from alpha channel". Thus, everything is selected except for the transparency.
  3. The layers dialog should not be displayed, you can access it via the menu "Windows", "Dockable dialogs" again.
  4. Now select in the menu "selection" > "To path". The selection is now saved in a path.
  5. In the same Dialog, in which the information about the levels, you will also find the "paths"Dialog on the Tab selector at the top (see Screenshot). Right-click the path that contains the outline of your graphic and select "path export ...".
  6. In the Dialog, enter a file name with the extension ".svg" is a. Here, the path is now saved as a vector file.
  7. This can be in a vector-editing program such as Inkscape use.
