Fine for missed MOT appointment
You must regularly have your vehicle undergoing a general inspection, colloquially known as TÜV. With a new car, this happens for the first time after 36 months and then every 24 months. Vehicles used for passenger transport, such as taxis, must undergo an MOT every 12 months.
- If you miss the TÜV appointment and are caught, you will be asked to pay. The amount of the fine depends on the length of time you have been in default.
- The TÜV always expires on the 1st of each month. If the sticker is no longer valid, you still have two months to complete the examination without penalty.
- You dont have to pay anything in the first two months after the appointment expires. However, the police will ask you to carry out the examination immediately and give you a deadline. You must report the enforcement within this period.
- Exceeding the limit by more than two months is an administrative offense and will result in a fine of 15 euros.
- If you have missed the appointment by more than four months, a fine will be initiated. The fine is 25 euros.
- If you are more than eight months late, you have to pay 60 euros and also earn a point in Flensburg.
- You should get a new sticker as soon as possible. The primary purpose of the TÜV is to protect your own life with a roadworthy car.
- In the best case scenario, the police or public order office will be accommodating and give you a deadline. You must have a new MOT sticker by the set date.
- Although the penalties are initially quite low, you should not overdo the MOT carelessly. If you cause an accident, your own insurance company can accuse you of negligence and only pay part of the damage.
