When Selecting new message with the arrow keys, Outlook marks the emails as read automatically as soon as you hesitate just a bit when you scroll. It's annoying, but easy to disable.

Outlook-"read"-change settings

In its basic setting, the program marks new messages very soon indeed as read. The behavior can be easily changed:

  • Older versions of Outlook (up to 2007): Open "tools > options" and go to the tab "More". Under "Outlook-areas ", click on "reading pane" and remove in the next Dialog check the box "Element to mark as read when selection is done".
  • In newer versions (Outlook 2010), you can find the above feature: "file > options > Advanced". In the top right of the Button "reading pane" (see Screenshot).
  • From now on, Outlook will change the Status of a new message only when you open it by double click or [enter] and read, or if you click with the right mouse button and from the context menu "mark As read" option.
