DOC and DOCX are both file extensions of Word documents. We explain to you the difference between the two formats.

Difference between DOC and DOCX

DOCX is the default file format for documents Word 2007, the versions before that, use DOC. Although both Word formats, there are some differences:
  • DOCX now behaves as a ZIP-archive, which means the Layout is in XML - and CSS-files are stored. This is a space-saving and faster than the old file format.
  • You can documents with file extension DOCX in Word 2003 or earlier open, unless you install the compatibility Pack. You can instead, but also OpenOffice use. The can deal with both formats of the house.
  • In the other direction there is no Problem - Word 2007 and higher can deal with the old DOC Format easily.
With the newer file format, you can not only work with Word or OpenOffice. We will show you how you DOCX with Google Drive open.
