Apple Mail: E-mail encrypt - how to

How to encrypt Apple Mail, your Emails and your mailbox is more secure, we will show you in this article.

E-Mails in Apple Mail encrypt – you have to do

To encrypt your E-Mails, you need another Software:
  1. First download the Software "GPG Suite" from the manufacturer's website to download and install the Tool.
  2. You have successfully installed the Software, you need to send a so-called key-pair create encrypted E-Mails. The key pair you can create with the program "GPG keychain", which is included in the GPG Suite.
  3. Click in the GPG keychain on the "New" button. Then enter your name and the E-Mail address and click the Box next to "Upload key after generation". So your key is uploaded to the key server.
  4. After you have clicked on "create key", you will be asked to make specific inputs on the keyboard or move the mouse to generate sufficiently random values for the key.
  5. In the next step, you need to enter a personal Passphrase. This should have as many different words and should not contain, in contrast to the normal password blank. Note: This Passphrase can't be changed – make a note of this so make sure!
  6. To write a coded message, start up in Apple Mail. GPG Mail is automatically integrated so you can start Composing the Mail. The recipient to the key server is available, you will need to do nothing more. This is not the case, you need to import the key of the recipient in GPG keychain.

  • Note: file attachments are automatically encrypted. If you have received an encrypted E-Mail, you must enter your Passphrase, then you can read the Mail. All Emails are encrypted with the so-called "Pretty Good Protection (PGP)"method.
