Wine is corked - reason for this is not always the Cork
Corked a winemust is not necessarily the Cork be responsible for it. However, this phenomenon occurs in the case of bottles with natural cork a little more often.
- For the Corks of the wine is Trichloroanisole responsible, short-TCA called.
- Corks are usually made of the bark of the cork oak. This is treated with certain plant protection products, results in TCA as a degradation product. For example, if non-visible mold fungi decompose on the bark of the plant protection product.
- The resulting musty-moldy smell is from the Cork in the wine.
- However, wines corks with a screw cap or plastic cork sealed can.
- Microorganisms can decompose chlorine-containing cleaning agents, which also TCA is created. This then passes on wooden pallets, but also on barrels, and hoses in the wine and corked it.
- A Corky wine, you recognize, actually, when you open the bottle. The wine smells musty and putrid and tastes, unfortunately so.
- How pronounced this is depends also from the alcohol and sugar content of the wine. Clearly the smell will be enhanced if you dilute the wine with mineral water.
- Harmful corked wine is not, by the way. The contained amounts of TCA are low. A pleasure, such a wine is not for sure.
