TikTok - this is how gifts work on the platform
Give gifts to support content creators on the social media platform TikTok. In order to use the gift function, you first have to spend money to top up your own account with so-called TikTok Coins.
- TikTok Coins are the in-app currency that you can use to buy gifts that support other users financially. You buy these either via the browser version of the app on your PC or directly in the app using your smartphone. Since the smartphone apps incur fees to Google or Apple, the company recommends buying coins via the web version, as you have to pay less there.
- To top up coins, go to your profile icon , which is located at the top right of the browser. The link to the coins page should now be in the second place in the menu that opens. Once there, select the number of coins you would like to top up your account with.
- Once you have purchased the desired amount of coins, all you have to do is go to the TikTokers video and select the gift symbol in the comments section at the bottom right of the text field. Not every TikTok account has the option to receive gifts, so its quite possible that your favorite TikToker doesnt have a gift symbol in the text field.
- During live streams on TikTok you will also find the gift symbol at the bottom of the screen. The whole thing is even displayed visually in the live stream when you have sent a gift.
TikTok - these are the dangers of sending gifts
As with other in-app purchases, there is a risk that you will quickly run into expenses when sending gifts on TikTok.
- The compulsory purchase of in-app currencies such as TikTok Coins influences your own perception of spending money . It feels like youre not spending hard-earned money, but rather a digital currency that often doesnt have the same mental weight as real money. This method can cause the inhibition threshold to spend money to drop and people to reach into their pockets more often.
- Children in particular can be strongly influenced by this, as they often lack a general understanding of topics such as finances and the value of money . Many live streams also aim to encourage viewers to send gifts, which can also easily influence children. Parents should therefore talk openly about the topic with their children and educate them.
- Another problem is that there is often no overview of how much money you have already spent on TikTok Coins. It is therefore advisable for parents to manage the purchase of TikTok coins and gifts for their children themselves or to prevent them altogether. You should also make sure that the bank details are not stored in the app to avoid accidentally purchasing the coins.
