Thunderbird with Google calendar sync - so it goes

With Thunderbird you can sync your Google calendar and manage. In this practice tip, you will learn how to do this and what are the benefits you will receive as a result.

Step 1: Thunderbird-Google-calendar prepare

Your Google calendar in Thunderbird to use, you first need two Addons to install.
  1. The required Addons are Lightning calendar and the Provider for Google calendar. To install the Addons, click the in Thunderbird, in the navigation bar, click "tools" and then on "Add-ons".
  2. With a click on the Gear icon in the top right you can select install now via the "Add-On from file..." the downloaded addon and install it. Important: Restart Thunderbird after the Installation is complete.
  3. Click in Thunderbird in the navigation bar on the newly released entry to the "events and tasks" and open the "calendar".
  4. In the Kalendertab a simple calendar now already for Offline use. You want to embed a Google calendar, right-click in the list of calendars on the left side and select "New calendar...".

Step 2: Google calendar copy Link

For the next steps, you need the *.ics Link to your Google calendar.
  1. The Link you receive by using your Google calendar in the Browser on your PC to open.
  2. On the left side of your calendar are also available here. You move the mouse over the calendar you want to sync in Thunderbird.
  3. Now click on the arrow button that appears next to the calendar name.
  4. With a click on "calendar settings", you come to the page with your "calendar details".
  5. Below you will find the "private address". Right-click on the green box labeled "ICAL".
  6. "Address of the left-save" copy the Link to the clipboard of your computer.

Step 3: sync Google calendar in Thunderbird

Now you need to insert the calendar in Thunderbird.
  1. In Thunderbird, click on the button "New calendar...". Here, a new window will appear. In the selection, select "network" and confirm with "Continue".
  2. Next, select "Google calendar" and paste in the address box, right-click and "Paste" the copied Link of your calendar. You put the check in the "Offline support" and confirm with "Continue".
  3. The last step is to sync your Google calendar successfully, you must enter your Google user name and password. You put the hook below the input fields so that your password is stored by Thunderbird.
  4. Again confirm with "Continue". You now have the opportunity to give your calendar a name. This is useful if you want to manage multiple calendars.

Absolutely useless.

This post is years out of date. The "Lightning calendar" add-on hasn't been required for years, indeed it doesn't even exist as an add-on any more. Calendering is built-in to TBird now.
