ownCloud encrypt - how to

You store the data on an ownCloud Storage, you can encrypt them with Tools of ownCloud, in order to protect you. Otherwise, the files are password accessible for everyone, the administrator has rights for the Webserver – for example, the operator of the server. We will show you how to enable the encryption on your Server. This manual refers to ownCloud 8.2.0.

ownCloud brings from his own encryption methods. You can enable it as follows:
  1. Log in as Administrator (admin).
  2. You open the menu in the top right-hand corner, and select "Administration".
  3. In the left column, select "server side encryption".
  4. Enable the setting "server side encryption".
  5. Read the warnings and then click "enable encryption".
  6. If an encryption module is loaded, it should now be the server-side encryption enabled.
  7. If the error message "loading of an encryption module" is displayed, you must first load the encryption module.

The base encryption module to enable in ownCloud

Sometimes is disabled in the default Installation of ownCloud encryption module. Proceed as follows to activate it:
  1. You can open this menu in the upper left corner and select "Apps".
  2. In the left column, select the menu item "activated".
  3. Are you looking for the module "Default encryption module" or "ownCloud-based encryption module" and activate it via the button under the entry.
  4. Now you can activate the encryption. To do this, follow again the first step.
  5. If you have enabled encryption before, you will now see the prompt to log back in to initialize the key.
  6. After re-Login the server-side encryption of your ownCloud.

ownCloud encrypt with independent Tools

If you do not have administration rights and the encryption module is disabled, you can encrypt your data on your computer before you upload it.
  • Container systems such as Vera crypt work, but are ill-suited. They can generate large files every time must be uploaded.
