What is the meaning of Leetspeak and where it comes from?
- The basic idea of Leetspeak is to replace individual letters or whole words with Numbers or special characters. For example, from "night," "the n8 is set to" - so "n" and "eight" together. Or is it only single letters are replaced by other characters that have a visual Similarity with the letter: From "gamers" is so "G4m3r".
- Gaming or the Internet in General is at the same time, the origin of Leetspeak. In corresponding groups of the computer scene a kind of developed a secret code to outsiders, or less experienced Gamer to exclude and not to conversations with them. Today, Leetspeak is used, but barely, for this purpose, but rather as self-irony or special customization of the user name.
- The word "Leet" itself is derived from the English "Elite" and "Eleet" > "Leet". We often written as "1337," and, therefore, in Leetspeak.
What characters are used in Leetspeak?
Of course in the Gaming scene have now formed as many and, in part, very individual characters and writing, that they can hardly be bundled listed. Here you can see a small selection of the most common Leets:
- From "A" is "4".
- The "E" seems to be rotated and results in a "3".
- The "H" in special characters put "|-|"
- A similar procedure can be with the "N": "|\|"
- From the "S" is "5" or "$".
- "4U" means "for you" so "for you".
- "Thank you" or "Thanks" is written: "thx"
