Add fractions: to Expand, to shorten and sum up
- A fraction consists of a numerator (above the fraction bar) and a denominator (below the fraction bar). To add two fractions, they must both have the same denominator.
- You need to expand, therefore, first of all, one or both of the breaks or cut, until you have the same denominator.
- A break, you can expand it by multiplying numerator and denominator with the same number. You can reduce by dividing numerator and denominator by the same number.
- Try to always bring both denominators to the smallest common multiple or smallest common divisor. Which can be not with a glance, you multiply both the fractions with the denominator of the other. Subsequently, both fractions have the same denominator.

- Example 1: you Want to add the fractions 4/9 and 1/3, first expand 1/3 by multiplying by 3 on 3/9. The Summer of the two fractions is then 7/9.
- Example 2: The fractions 2/5 and 5/6 add, by expanding both the fractions. 2/5 multiplied by 6 results in 12/30, 5/6 extended with 5 25/30. The result 37/30 is.
