Tip 2: The correct folder structure on the USB Stick
So the PS3 can read your data, you must follow a specific folder structure. You create on your USB Stick the following folder in the main directory. Please make sure of the correct spelling:
- DCIM for photos and Videos from a digital camera
- "MUSIC": for your music files
- "PICTURE": for photos from your Computer
- "VIDEO": for movies and other Video files
- "PS3": for different sub-folders (see the following section)

Open the folder "PS3" and put there these five sub-folders:
- "BACKUP": backup of the PS3
- "GAME": for games from the PlayStation Store
- "SAVEDATA": for game saves and other save games
- "THEME": for new Designs of the PS3 menus
- "UPDATE" for Firmware Updates from a USB Stick
Tip 3: PS3-compatible file formats
Even after countless software updates, the PS3-compatible formats are limited. Convert all your files in one of the following formats. This works for example with the Freeware program "XMedia Recode".
- In the case of music formats the PS3 supports optional Memory Stick audio format (ATRAC), MP3, MP4 (MPEG-4 AAC), WAVE (Linear PCM) or WMA.
- Your movies, you should either as MPEG-1, AVI, MPEG-2 (PS,TS), H. 264/MPEG-4 AVC, DivX, WMV or VC-1 save.
- For photos, you are set almost no limits. Here are the game console is compatible with all well-known formats (JPEG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, PNG, MPO).
Instead of USB Sticks to the PS3 to connect, you can also use the internal drive replacing.
