External hard drive in Linux format: how to

To format a external hard drive under Linux, you will need a small add-on program. In this tutorial we will explain the necessary steps to get you quickly to your destination.

Linux: External hard drive, format it with "GParted"

  1. First start your Linux machine and connect the external hard drive.
  2. Now you need the program "GParted", which is pre-installed on most versions of Linux already. This should however not be the case, you can use GParted either via the Software Center or in our Download-area to download and install.
  3. You can open GParted and type in your user password.
  4. Click the selection box at the top right and select the to format the hard drive.
  5. Select the appropriate partitions, click with the right mouse button and go to "Unmount".
  6. Click again with the right mouse button and select "Format" as well as the desired file system in which you want the formatting to be done.
  7. Click on the green check mark and confirm again. The hard drive is now formatted.
