What you need for the restoration of their recordings
How vinyl records digitize, we explain in this practical tip. In a few steps, you can improve the quality of the recording. Only Freeware is used. From a Host Software and a few Plug-ins your restoration system:
- If you have not yet done, install "Audacity".
- Download of the "auto gate/Expander" and unzip the archive in the Plug-ins folder of "Audacity".
- Go with the "Blood Overdrive" alike.
- Additionally, install the "Kjaerhus Audio Classics" and move the files from the folder "C:\Programme\VST" in the Plug-ins folder of the "Audactiy".
The noise of digitized records to minimize
Recordings of vinyl records always contain some noise, and sometimes even mains hum. With the effects of "Audacity" and other Free-VST-providers, you can minimize these disorders:
- Select an area of the recording where only the noise is. You identify with the effect "noise removal..." the noise profile, and lower it by 5 to 10 dB. The noise is quieter, but will disappear.
- If you experience hum a Network, select the "Notch Filter..." and remove them with a Q-Gaktor of about 17, first 50 Hz, then 150, 250, 350, etc., until the hum is much quieter become.
- The "slim slow slider: auto gate Expander" to get the rest of the noise in the handle. Are you looking for a range to hear which is almost entirely noise, and set the Threshold so high that the noise is most of the time inaudible. The Attack time you should adjust depending on the music. Beat-heavy music like Techno or Dubstep tolerated, with significantly shorter times than the broader music such as chamber music, Ambient, or Jazz. To listen to the music with your settings a bit and reduce the Threshold in a way that allows it to disappear a lot of noise, without that soft music blade dismembered passages.
Scattered POPs and hiss from recordings remove
Noise or Cracking occur occasionally, you can eliminate this in two ways specifically:
- The "repair" removes sounds and noises to Crack, in a small marked area, if these do not fit the sound to the Environment.
- If you zoom in with the Zoom tool (magnifying glass icon) close enough to the place with the sound bug, you can draw with the drawing tool (pencil icon) contours, smooth and Crack and crackle removal.
Brilliance and full tone to win back
If the noise reduction processes of the music brilliance has been lost, you can win some of these artificially back. With little effort you will also increase the volume and Fullness of the sound:
- You activate it in the "VST: Blood Overdrive" the "PreAmp" to a very low Level and regulate the "PreBand" and "Colour" so long, until you get a brighter, more natural sound.
- Select the "Kjaerhus Audio: Classic Compressor" preset "Mix-Down". So the music sounds more full.
- You are going to "Normalize" and normalize the level of your music to -0 dB.
