You want to disable the automatic Update of Spotify, it does not work, unfortunately, via a simple setting. Spotify wants to always update to the latest Version, so you'll have to prevent the Software only with a little Trick to it. We will show you how to do it.

Automatic Updates in Spotify to disable

  1. Simultaneously press the keys "Windows" and "R", so the command "Run" will open.
  2. Enter "%appdata%\spotify" and confirm with the "OK"Button.
  3. Click with the right mouse button on an empty area in the folder and select "New" "text document".
  4. Give the file the name "Spotify_new.exe" and you repeat the step for any file with the name "Spotify_new.exe.sig".
  5. The two files have the extension ".txt". This you need to delete, however. The .txt extension is not easy to remove, you need to the file extensions under Windows display.
  6. Then click with the right mouse button on one of the files and select "properties".
  7. Select below the Option "read-only", close the window with "OK" and repeat the process for the second file.
  8. Spotify will now be prevented from updating to a new Version, because the permission is not granted to Delete the old Version.

Spotify: disable Updates and the old Version

  • The automatic Update on your Computer has already been carried out, will bring you the Stop the Updates, not much. You would like to return to the old Version, you need to proceed a little differently.
  • Uninstall Spotify and download a old Version from a trusted source. Install the old Version and follow the above instructions before the first Start of Spotify by. Thus, you can use the old Version permanently.

Does it work?

The .txt extension is not easy to remove, you "need to the file extensions under Windows display." I'm sorry what? I feel like I'm having a stroke trying to read that section.

Thanks for the stroke I guess.

I tried the method and it didn't work at all and still told me to update it.

Yea this does not work. I followed the guide to a tee and doesn't work it just keeps reinstalling if you shut down the program. If you have it running all the time then its fine but the moment you close it, its a wrap.

Hey original poster of this topic, You gonna reply back or is this topic dead in the water? Maybe someone else might know of a proper work around?

do you know how to do this for macos iphone/ipod?

Closing and openening didn't cause the program to update for me (yet). Will changing the file attributes to a "System" file with Total Commander prevent that? Might be worth a shot..

Right, close Spotify completely (right-click on the taskbar and exit). Open up a file explorer window, and navigate to: "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Spotify". Create a new folder in there called "Update". Change the permissions of the new "Update" directory, so that only the administrator account can modify it (right-click the folder -> properties -> Security -> Advanced... -> Remove every entry under the "Permission Entries" field). Now Spotify won't be able to download the updates to install it, it'll try, and think it has, but the update will fail, and you'll just be loaded in to your current version forever... Unless your current Spotify content has the ability to change the update directory, which, at present, no version seems to do.

I've tried this method multiple times to no avail. Still updates once the program is shut down.

This no longer works.. Don't let the date fool you, it's pretending it's last updated but it's actually today's date...

Solved It did actually solve it for me, thanks!

Yeah this creating an update folder doesn't work. I'm not sure how as one doesn't appear when spotify updates (*2021 MAY)

What the fuck are on you about, this is incomprehensible.

It still works. Spotify utilises "Spotify" directories in both AppData/Local, and AppData/Roaming. It'll create the "Update" directory in AppData/Local only, and it'll delete it after the update has completed. The way this works is Spotify will trigger an update, it'll see that the Update folder already exists, so it'll proceed to download a bunch of randomly named files in to the AppData/Roaming/Spotify/temp directory. It'll then tell you that there's an update ready, and that you should restart the application. Spotify, on startup, will then notice that there are loads of files in this temp directory (so there must be an update it needs to install). It'll then try to move the files to the AppData/Local/Spotify/Update directory, but won't have the correct permissions (as we've restricted it to just Administrator access, which the Spotify process is [hopefully!!] not running as), so it'll delete the temp files, and continue to load.

Still working! :))), Thu 17, 2022

Solved it's comment still works. I had to disable permission inheritance on the directory first before I could change the permissions, but after that it seems to be working a treat. Thanks!
